The 3A and 4A Columbia Basin Big Nine schools in the Tri-Cities and Walla Walla voted last winter to leave the CBBN and form their own league, the Mid-Columbia Conference. At the same time West Valley-Yakima decided not to op up to 3A and left the CBBN for the CWAC. The new CBBN league is comprised of the 5 District 6 schools plus Sunnyside (District 5): A.C. Davis (4A-Yakima), Eastmont (4A-E. Wenatchee), Eisenhower (4A-Yakima), Moses Lake (4A-Moses Lake), Sunnyside (3A-Sunnyside) and Wenatchee (4A-Wenatchee). The MCC conference includes all the District 5 schools: Chiawana (4A-Pasco), Hanford (4A-Richland), Kamiakin (3A-Kennewick), Kennewick (3A-Kennewick), Pasco (4A-Pasco), Richland (4A-Richland), Southridge (3A-Kennewick), Sunnyside (3A-Sunnyside) and Walla Walla (4A-Walla Walla). Sunnyside competes in the CBBN during the regular season but in the MCC for Regional and State berths. The MCC will compete with the GSL in a Regional Championship for their 3A and 4A state berths. The CBBN has decided to not compete in the Regional tournament and will award their 1 state berth based on the District Championship.

YAKIMA - John Robert Barany, 25, died Wednesday, May 16, 2012 from complications of a stroke suffered two days earlier. He was known for always being late, but now, too early. Robbie, as he was known to us, was the cherished son of Dr. John Stephen and Carol Ann of Yakima, and the beloved brother of Alison Claire of Olympia and William Stephen of Seattle. He is survived by both of his grandfathers, Robert Sahnlein of Buffalo, New York, and William Stephen Barany, of Spokane, Washington. Additionally, many loving aunts, uncles, and cousins survive him, and he will especially be missed by his Aunt Audrey Sahnlein of Yakima, who loved him as her son. He is preceded in death by both of his grandmothers: Johanna Louise Barany of Spokane, and Helen Rita Sahnlein of Buffalo.
Robbie was born August 7, 1986 in Yakima, 21 days overdue. As a boy, he enjoyed playing soccer, basketball, and air guitar. He graduated from St.Joseph/Marquette School, but just barely, having faced suspension shortly before graduation after being identified as the ringleader of a plot to distribute fireworks at school. He went on to graduate from Eisenhower High School, where under the mentorship of Coach Phil English and his staff, and with the support of exceptional teammates, especially Charles Cummings, he cultivated his gift for distance running. In his senior year, Robbie was a Footlocker Cross Country All-American, and represented the Western region at the 2004 Footlocker High School National Cross Country Championships in San Diego, finishing eighth. He held the Valley Best All-Time Fastest 3200m from 2005-2012, a mark that was bested by another outstanding Eisenhower athlete on the night after he died. Don’t tell Robbie. He was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where he earned a degree in History and was proud to be part of the Fighting Irish. He enjoyed woodworking, particularly making birdhouses, and generations and generations of birds to come will never want for housing arrangements. Perhaps most importantly, he was a registered organ donor, and his family is comforted by the fact that recipients in the Pacific Northwest have benefited from his amazing gift to them. Well done, Robbie.
While we are devastated by his death, we continue to thank God for giving us Robbie. Robbie will be remembered for his million idiosyncrasies, and for the million inside jokes that each of us shared with him. He was a bright, creative, passionate, and courageous human being, and performed a rendition of "Puff the Magic Dragon" that still leaves his siblings in hysterics. They will run the upcoming Seattle Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon in his honor, with the full knowledge that Robbie will undoubtedly criticize their slow times and poor form, but that he is thrilled by their tribute to him. "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not grow faint." Isaiah 40:13. The family is especially grateful to the Yakima Chest Clinic, Memorial Respiratory Therapy, and the nurses of the Memorial ICU and Life Center Northwest, who cared for Robbie with extraordinary skill, professionalism, and love. This gives the family great peace and satisfaction.
Mass of the Resurrection will be held at St. Paul Cathedral on Friday, June 15, 2012 at 11:00 am. A reception will follow at the family home immediately afterward. All friends of Robbie and his family are warmly invited to share in this celebration of his extraordinary life. The family respectfully asks that those who wish to honor his memory make a donation to a favorite charity, in lieu of flowers.
It was with great sadness that we announced the passing of Coach Annette Menzia. Annette and Ray were favorites of all the kids who turned out for Cross Country and Track & Field at Eisenhower. Her memorial service was held on Friday, February 19, 2010 at the Keith & Keith Terrace Heights Chapel. Following is her Obituary from the Yakima Herald-Republic:
YAKIMA - Annette Menzia, 73, passed away unexpectedly at home February 12th, 2010. She was born January 17th, 1937 to Manford and Maxine Nelson in Indianapolis, Indiana. They moved to California where they lived for a time, before moving up to Zillah, WA, where they remained for the rest of her childhood. She studied music, and was trained to sing, as well as play the piano and trumpet.
While she was in college she met the man of her dreams, Ray Menzia, on a blind date. Less than a year later, they eloped and began their journey of love together.
Ray taught school and coached while Annette became a homemaker and mother. She returned to finish college in the 1980's with a degree in education. She spent many years working as a substitute teacher in the West Valley school system, as well as coaching alongside her husband in track and field and cross country.
Ray and Annette impacted the lives of many young people in their years of coaching at West Valley Junior High, Eisenhower High School, and Carroll High School. They founded the West Yakima Ramblers track club, and ran it for over a decade.
She will best be remembered by her family and friends as a loving, caring, and giving person who had a quick wit and an extraordinary relationship with her best friend and partner of 49 years.
She is survived in death by her husband, Ray Menzia of Yakima, sister Gloria Draggoo of Vancouver, WA., daughter Cathy Curry of Helena, Montana, son Todd Menzia of Yakima, daughter Meaghan Phelps of Yakima, son Conrad Menzia of Tulsa, Oklahoma, 6 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, and two nieces.
Annette is preceded in death by her parents, Manford and Maxine Nelson.
